We may think of Christmas time as a time to relax and be with family and friends. In the busy days leading up to Christmas, we tend to get a little drained with all the parties, shopping, and decorating. However, remembering what the season is truly about sometimes gets lost. Volunteering at Christmas time is a way to give back to the community and give your family an opportunity to reflect on things that are important. The first step is finding an organization that you care about. Make sure it is one that will bring you enjoyment and a sense of accomplishment.
There are many ways to volunteer, including your time, your talents, or even buying food items or toys for children in sponsored gift programs. By getting your children involved, you will teach them to appreciate the true meaning of the season. Volunteer at a shelter a few hours a week. Hospitals and senior centers are also places to remember around the holidays. Take a few decorations to a nursing home to help brighten the season. The Salvation Army has many different ways to volunteer and does so much to help the community’s needs. The simple act of a putting together a nice basket of items and a few toys for the family down the street having a hard time counts.
Many churches also have meals and programs around Christmas time that you can give your time and talents to. The true meaning of Christmas is in the giving of love. Show true Christmas spirit by taking time to volunteer for those less fortunate than you.
